The Library Foundation was formed in 1982 and received its IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit Tax Exempt status on October 22, 1993.
In 1998, the Foundation received two large gifts that acted as a catalyst to move library expansion projects forward. JCLF took the lead in addressing the pressing need to acquire sites for new library buildings in 9 branch communities. The Campaign for Site Acquisition was highly successful, raising over $2 million in contributions and land donations. Local citizens, city governments, business owners and foundations contributed to the campaign.
In May 2000, Jackson County voters approved a $39 million bond to rebuild 14 branches of the Jackson County Library system. The White City Library Branch, built with separate funds, opened in 2001.
The Jackson County Library System was closed between April and October, 2007. The experience underscored the value of the libraries to the communities in the County, and since re-opening under contract with a library services firm, LSSI, usage in the libraries is now at pre-closure levels. Circulation, number of new library cards issued, internet usage, and meeting room usage numbers are high, with far fewer hours of operation.
Jackson County entered into contract with LSSI and will renegotiate in 2012. A long range strategic planning process is underway, the results of which will align the Library Foundation's activities with the priorities of the community.
The Foundation established its endowment fund to provide ongoing support for library collections, programs, technology and enhancement needs. A permanent endowment furthers our public library's ability to meet the challenge of building a vibrant library system that maintains a high level of excellence.
